Union Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani will meet vice chancellors of India’s central universities at a two-day conference scheduled to be held Hotel Mountview from Saturday. Nearly 40 vice-chancellors from across the country will attend the event. Official sources said this was the first time such a meet will be held in the city.

It is yet unconfirmed, however, whether Irani will be present on the first or the second day of the meet. UGC chairman Ved Prakash will also attend the meet.

Sources said PU is likely to take up the allocation of additional funds for various projects at the meet. Recently, a delegation headed by MP Kirron Kher and Panjab University Teachers Association president (PUTA) president Rajat Sandhir; dean research Lalit K Bansal and senior academician BS Ghumman had met the minister in Delhi to put the PU and its employees demands before the minister.
“We hope we have a detailed discussion on various issues related to employees and funding for the university’s various projects with her during her stay in Chandigarh,” a top PU official involved in the exercise said.
