Additional district and sessions judge Amarjit Singh awarded life sentence to retired ASI Surinder Kumar Rana for allegedly killing his daughter-in-law for bringing insufficient dowry.
The court on Friday also awarded life term to victim's husband Vishal Rana, co-accused in the case.
Prosecution said Barara resident Nisha married Ambala resident Vishal in 2008 and was continuously harassed for dowry.
On December 24, the victim was pressurised to bring `5 lakh in cash and was sent to her mother's home, adding that she arranged `50,000 and handed it over to her husband.
In his compliant, victim's uncle Rajpal Singh had said on January 1, both accused burnt Nisha by pouring kerosene over her. Nisha was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh where she had succumbed to her burn injuries.
Singh claimed in her statement to the police, Nisha had blamed her father-in-law and husband for the crime. He added that initially Baldev Nagar police had registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian penal code, but after her death it section 304-B (dowry death) was slapped against them.
