Despite a report filed by the municipal corporation’s enforcement wing 11 days back, which confirmed flagrant violations by the contractor of the paid parking lot outside Elante Mall in Industrial Area, the civic body has not taken any action. Meanwhile, visitors continue to complain about overcharging at the lot, saying parking attendants are charging Rs 20 instead of Rs 10 for cars.
The report was prepared after an enforcement wing team conducted a surprise check at the parking lot on September 17 and detected various infringements including non-functional CCTV cameras, no e-ticketing machines, attendants not wearing the prescribed uniform and no attendant stationed inside the parking area. The report was submitted to MC additional commissioner Sarita Malik for action on the same day.
“We’ll again conduct a surprise check at the parking lot after which appropriate action would be taken.”
However another senior MC official said: “Action should’ve been taken on the day the report was submitted. Also, even after eleven days, no instructions have been issued to the enforcement wing to conduct another surprise check at the parking lot.”
Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Mullanpur, said: “Every week I visit the mall along with my family and the attendants charge me Rs 20 to park my car. Despite several complaints, no action has been taken so far.”
Another regular visitor to the mall, Suresh Kumar, a resident of Sector 66, SAS Nagar, said: “Since I come here with my family members, I avoid a confrontation, as it can turn ugly. If they’re questioned, they’re rude and even use abusive language. Visitors are being charged Rs 20 for parking a car even though the MC has prescribed Rs 10 for full-day parking. This has been going on for the past five months.”

At the MC’s finance and contract committee meeting held last month, it was decided if the parking lot contractor was caught overcharging visitors for the seventh consecutive time he will be slapped with a Rs 10,000 fine.
For the first complaint about overcharging the fine is Rs 500, rising to Rs 1,000, Rs 1,500, Rs 2,500, Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,500 for the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth complaints, respectively.
