PGI to celebrate lefties' day on August 13

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Reserach (PGIMER), Chandigarh, is set to celebrate International Left Handers' Day on Wednesday.

The event is being organised by the Advanced Pediatrics Centre and UT education department's Division of School Health.

Dr Bhavneet Bharti, associate professor, department of paediatrics, will decode various myths associated with left handedness in India. Special educational and daily household needs specific to left-handed children will be highlighted and various challenges faced by left-handed students in the right-hand dominant world will be elaborately discussed and explained at the workshop.

Identifying left-handedness or laterality will be demonstrated practically by Dr Ashok Jaryal.

Dr Paramjyoti, medical officer, school health, will address the nursery teachers and discuss the importance of proper writing techniques to be taught to children at the beginning of their careers.

More than 500 students and teachers from various schools of Chandigarh are expected to participate in the workshop as well as seminar.

A multifaceted quiz will be conducted by Dr Sahul and Dr Dharma to make students aware of left hand dominance, its myths or dilemmas and empower them about this unique trait.

Dr Rathnapratheep will share with participants various tools and instruments specifically customised to left-handed students and adults. In addition students and teachers will share interesting anecdotes related to the handedness with others. The function will conclude with tug of war between the right and left-handers
