The victim’s husband had died two years ago, and she was staying with her mother-in-law in flat allotted to slum-dwellers in Sector 20.
According to her allegations in the first information report (FIR), when she was looking for work, Baby, a resident of the same locality, took her to Dhakoli in Zirakpur for a job. There, she was allegedly confined in a house in the village and abused sexually.

When she tried to escape from the “prostitution”, she used to be beaten up, as per her allegations.
She has three children, two of them staying with her mother and the third was living with her at the Sector-20 flat.

In June, when she “finally escaped” from Dhakoli and started living again with her mother-in-law, Baby’s husband Shravan Kumar, Monu, both of who are tempo drivers, Ajay, Ritesh and another unidentified person raped her over three days from June 28 to 30.

Even when she went to the police, she alleged that she was slapped and sent back. Then she went to the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) on July 7 with her complaint.

On July 8, the FIR was registered at the Sector-20 police station. The case was registered under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (rape), 500 (defamation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to breach peace) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Baby, Rekha, Ajay, Monu, Ritesh and Shravan; the last three have been arrested.

“She used to be confined in Dhakoli village. We are searching for the three accused who are absconding,” said inspector Surinder Singh, the police station house officer.
