Officials, who were looking to catch him in the act, said the patwari, Anuj Sharma, and his assistant Rinku, were booked on the complaint of advocate Raman Sangra, a city resident under the Prevention of Corruption Act, after the former sought a bribe of 10,000 for getting some mutation-related work.

Inspector Ram Phal of the bureau said the deal was fixed at 6,000 and a team had gone to his office to conduct a raid and catch him in the act.

“But the patwari refused to accept the money, as some locals were present at this office and he escaped later. Now, we will issue a notice in his name to join the investigation and further action will be taken accordingly,” the officer told HT.

On being asked about the possible action against the patwari, deputy commissioner Vikram said, “A report will be sought if he has gone missing in this bribery case and an action will be taken accordingly.”
