“The troops spotted suspicious movement in the Tarkundi forward area around 10pm on Friday, prompting them to open fire. This led to retaliatory small arms fire from across the border, with the ensuing exchange lasting between one-and-a-half to two hours,” a police official said.

There were no reports of any casualties on either side.

A search operation was launched on Saturday morning to flush out infiltrators and ascertain if any managed to cross over.

The sector remains under heightened surveillance.
