A smart city in the making, Chandigarh will get its Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) with Union home minister Amit Shah scheduled to inaugurate the facility on March 25.

The centre will be used to keep a check on traffic violators, monitor municipal corporation services and resident complaint redressal.
Following the inauguration of the ICCC, traffic challans will be done through the CCTV footage, largely eliminating the human element in the issuance of the challans on city roads.
The ICCC has been implemented in Chandigarh under the Smart City mission to ensure safety and security of citizens, provide efficient service deliveries and promote sustainable growth.
Speaking about the centre, MC commissioner and Chandigarh Smart City Limited chief executive officer Anindita Mitra said, “This state of the art command centre is integrated with major citizen services including water, electricity, sewage, waste management, transport, e-governance, public bike sharing for effective monitoring and data analysis. The centre shall also assist administrators in case of a disaster, by providing them with real-time incident details and help in rapid resolution,”
The ICCC is monitoring the smart field elements like CCTV surveillance, wherein more than 1,000 cameras are installed for real-time surveillance of major junctions and important landmarks like water works, parks, government hospitals, community centres, parking locations, schools at around 285 locations.

A part of the ICCC, the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), wherein traffic-enforcement systems including red light violation detection (40 junctions), overspeeding violation (10 systems), automatic number plate recognition (40 junctions and 20 entry and exits of the city have been put up, is also expected help make roads safer and reduce accidents.
The Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS), which monitors real-time traffic conditions and uses artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to improve the signal timing, is also expected to become fully operational soon. This system is installed on 40 junctions.
In addition to these systems, a public addressing system and variable message signs are also installed to disseminate information like traffic alerts, meteorological information at 40 junctions.
For communication, a city-wide optical fibre cable backbone of more than 250 km has been installed. This high-speed network shall provide the infrastructure for future expansions of the project.
