Chandigarh: Sector-22 juice seller, son attacked over business rivalry

Unidentified assailants attacked a father-son duo with sharp-edged weapons at their juice shop in Sector 22 on Wednesday night.

Police said the attack on Ashok Kumar and his son Vinay appeared to be a fallout of business rivalry, as they had been having frequent tiffs with a nearby shopkeeper who also sold juice.

In his complaint, Kumar said on Wednesday afternoon, a customer was headed to his shop, when an employee of another juice seller poached him. Ashok had then warned the employer not to indulge such practices.

Later at night, he and his son were closing their shop around 11 pm, when some men attacked them with sharp-edged weapons. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera.

Kumar alleged that earlier also, the rival shopkeeper’s customers, who were students from Haryana and lived in Chandigarh as paying guests, had threatened him and held him by his collar. He had retaliated by throwing a stool at them. The matter was reported to police but had ended in compromise.

Following the Wednesday attack, police recorded the father-son duo’s statements and registered a case at the Sector-17 police station.
