Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday flayed Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, accusing him of indulging in “cheap theatrics” on the sensitive issue of sacrilege. He questioned why the Congress government never caught the sacrilege perpetrators during its 2017-2022 regime in the state.
Sukhbir’s comments came after Warring raised the sacrilege issue in Parliament. Addressing a rally at Baba Bakala as part of the party’s “Punjab Bachao” campaign along with party’s halka in-charge Baljit Singh Jalalusma, the SAD president said, “Why Warring never raised his voice against the sacrilege committed by the then Congress PM Indira Gandhi in 1984?”
Asking if Warring went to any place where 597 sacrileges took place in the last 10 years, Sukhbir said the Congress had only done politics on the sensitive issue.
“The incidents of sacrilege started increasing after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) entered Punjab in 2014,” he said. Sukhbir also referred to a 2016 Malerkotla case involving AAP MLA Naresh Yadav. Targeting the chief minister, Sukhbir accused him of discouraging youth from taking up animal husbandry ventures.
Outlining his party’s plans, Badal announced that a future SAD government would provide minimum support price (MSP) on milk to protect dairy farmers. He said a world skill university would be set up with centres in every district to train youth as per industry needs.
