A 22-year-old share market trader arrested for stealing gold jewellery from a city jeweller has told police that mounting financial losses in stock trading pushed him into crime.

Following the arrest of Mohammad Afsar, a resident of Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday in connection with the theft, police recovered the stolen gold jewellery, including a necklace, a pair of earrings and tops.
According to police, Afsar posed as a customer at a jewellery shop in Ludhiana’s old city and escaped with a gold set weighing nearly 28 grams. Assistant commissioner of police (ACP)Anil Kumar Bhanot said the theft took place on June 9 at around 11:35 am in the area under division number-1 police station.
A case was registered and probe was on. During interrogation, Afsar revealed that he had suffered heavy losses in stock market trading and turned to theft in an attempt to recover the money. He also confessed to selling the stolen gold in Meerut. Police said the accused shaved his head after the theft to avoid identification and mislead investigators. After securing a three-day police remand, police raided Meerut and recovered the entire stolen gold weighing 28 grams.
