The Ludhiana police arrested five men for allegedly accepting bets on league matches of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday night near Subhani Building Chowk. The police recovered ₹60,000 in cash, three mobile phones, three registers and a car from their possession.
The accused have been identified as Gauraj Bajaj of Neem Wala Chowk, Pankaj Khanna of Mohalla Shehzada, Vishal Sharma of Civil City, Prince Sharma of Chandar Nagar and Mani Bansal of Giaspura.
ASI Boota Singh, who is investigating the case, said that the police conducted the raid following a tip-off. They received information that the accused are accepting bets in league matches of the IPL in a car near Subhani Building.
The police conducted a raid and arrested the accused. The accused were making entries in the registers. A case under Sections 420, 294 of the IPC, and Sections 13A, 3, and 67 of the Gambling Act has been registered against the accused at the Division Number 2 police station.
Earlier on April 23, the police had arrested 13 persons for setting bets on IPL matches. The police had also recovered ₹2.48 lakh in cash from the accused. The accused were running the racket from a rented accommodation near the Police Lines.
