A BMW car was reduced to ashes after it caught fire near MBD Mall on Ferozepur Road late on Sunday . The two occupants — a young man and a woman — managed to jump out in time and escaped unhurt, police said.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver noticed smoke rising from the front of the BMW X1 and immediately steered the vehicle to the roadside. However, before he could step out, flames erupted from the engine compartment and quickly spread.
Within minutes, the fire engulfed the entire car, sending thick smoke into the air and forcing passersby to keep a safe distance.
Local residents and shopkeepers tried to douse the flames using available means, but the intensity of the fire made their efforts ineffective.
Ajay, who runs an egg stall nearby, said he also attempted to help but had to step back due to the heat. The fire brigade was immediately informed.
Fire officials said they received the call at around 11.36 pm and rushed to the spot. Fireman Raman Kumar said that by the time the team reached the area, the car was already completely gutted.
