The Hoshiarpur police in association with the district administration on Thursday demolished an illegal building constructed on encroached land of a woman drug peddler at village Nainowal Vaid.

The demolition took place in the presence of the village panchayat, which reported to the authorities about illegal activities being carried by the woman smuggler, identified as Gurmeet Kaur.

Hoshiarpur’s senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sandeep Kumar Malik said Kaur had illegally encroached on panchayat land and refused to vacate it despite multiple warnings.

“Following complaints from the panchayat, the district development and panchayats officer initiated action, leading to the demolition. Kaur has eight NDPS cases registered against her, with convictions in three,” he said.

Village sarpanch Naginder Singh said the woman had shifted to the village nearly seven years ago along with her son from nearby Chautala village and they were allegedly selling drugs.

“At least 13 youngsters died due to drug abuse in the village in recent times. The people from nearby villages used to come to Kaur’s house to get drugs. The panchayat also pased a resolution for her ouster from the village. She shifted to her new house in Hoshiarpur’s Tanda recently,” Singh said.
