The 75-year-old former Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, who was found dead on Sunday, allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Noida’s Phase 2, police said on Tuesday, adding that they have recovered a note from his house.

The 1975-batch IAS officer was from Dehradun and lived alone in Kendriya Vihar 2 Society in Noida, Phase 2. His wife and two children live in Dehradun.

According to police, the incident came to fore after Mehta’s phone went unanswered and his wife alerted society’s security to check.

“We were informed about the incident at around 1.30pm on Sunday. When we reached the spot, the main entrance was open, and he was found dead,” a police officer, part of the investigation, said.

“A suicide note was recovered from the spot in which he mentioned that he was taking an extreme step due to prolonged illness and no one was responsible,” the officer added.

The body was handed over to his family after legal procedures.
