As many as 140 persons had narrow escape after a major fire broke out at an engineering firm based in Hinjewadi on Tuesday morning.

The blaze erupted around 2.30 am in the Varroc Lighting Systems India company premises, located at Maan near Hinjawadi Phase II. No casualties have been reported so far, according to PCMC fire brigade.

After the call came in to the Hinjewadi MIDC fire station, fire brigade tenders and water tankers from Hinjewadi MIDC, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) fire brigade, Pune fire brigade and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) reached the spot.

Sunil Ingawale, fire officer at Hinjewadi MIDC said, “The company is spread over eight acres. The fire, which possibly broke out due to a short circuit was initially confined to the warehouse of the Varroc company and then gradually spread in other areas in the firm.”

“When the fire broke out, around 140 employees were working in the company that supplies exterior vehicle lighting systems, in the third shift. All the employees were evacuated. Only one employee who was present near the warehouse sustained minor injuries. As the fire was massive, help was called from PCMC, Pune and PMRDA fire brigade stations. It took us 10 hours to douse the fire,” Ingawale added.

The plant contained several automobile parts like head and tail lights, raw material such as plastic, thinner, silicon fluids, and chemicals, said fire officials.
