The process to appoint a full-time director general of police in Uttar Pradesh faces a fresh delay as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has returned the state government’s panel of officers, flagging objections over eligibility and procedural compliance.

Sources in the home department and police headquarters (PHQ) said the file has been sent back for revision, with the UPSC seeking adherence to prescribed norms in preparing the panel.

The state had recently forwarded names of senior IPS officers following approval from chief minister Yogi Adityanath. However, the objections have put the empanelment process on hold, further delaying the appointment.

The development extends the over four-year gap since Uttar Pradesh last had a regular DGP. Incumbent acting chief Rajeev Krishna continues to hold additional charge and remains a key contender, subject to a revised panel and UPSC clearance.

Officials said the state will rework the proposal and resend it after addressing the concerns. The final appointment will be made once the UPSC clears a panel of eligible officers, from which the state government selects the DGP.
