A priest was found dead at Sanatan Dharam Mandir in Bharat Colony on Bhamiyan road on Tuesday morning. There were five wounds to his body seemingly made by a sharp weapon. A woman, who lives in front of the temple, discovered the body lying in a pool of blood and raised an alarm.
Police reached the spot and started an investigation. The man was identified as Ram Parkash Sharma (40). He was serving as the priest for the past two years after the death of the previous head Kirti Maharaj. He belonged to Jonpur in Uttar Pradesh. Sharma resided inside the temple premises.
Police suspect that the priest was murdered over a personal rivalry as there were no signs of a burglary. Deputy commissioner of police (investigation) Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said the priest was killed in the wee hours. A dispute over the position of the head of the temple could be the reason behind the murder, he added.
A disciple of Kirti Maharaj was eyeing the position for some time now. Police registered a case of murder against unidentified people at Jamalpur police station.
