MUMBAI: As many as 6.1 million electors in the state who could not be mapped during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) are likely to face deletion from the electoral rolls. This is in addition to the 20.70 million untraceable names (deceased shifted, absent, or registered at more than one place) already expected to be excluded from the draft rolls, which will be published on August 31.
The 6.1 million people have not been able to provide records from the 2004 SIR, which is the benchmark for establishing nationality. These voters will have to substantiate their claim of nationality by producing documents pertaining to themselves or their parents from 2004 or before during the next stage of the exercise. Election Commission officials, however, believe that a large majority of them may not be able to produce the documents.
“Those born after December 2004 will have to produce their own documents and those of their parents to establish their nationality and date of birth,” said an official from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. “Electors born between July 1987 and December 2004 will have to provide their own documents and those of one of their parents while those born before July 1987 will have to only provide their own documents.”
The officer said that the 6.1 million unmapped electors were either not recorded in the 2004 SIR or had anomalies in their names/ages. “These are the ones who failed to rectify the situation with documents during our recent enumeration exercise,” he said. “Considering this, it will be difficult for many of them to produce documents during the one-month period provided for claims and objections. We expect over four million more electors to be struck off the list, taking the total number of deleted voters to over 25 million.”

{{/usCountry}}Another official said that the authorities expected more than three million first-time voters to be added. “The ECI had frozen the cut-off date for enrolment at October 2024, the month when the assembly elections were held,” he said. “The number of probable voters who turned 18 in the two years since then is over three million. Besides this, over 2.5 million people turned 18 by October 2024 but did not register themselves. Of this pool of 5.5 million, at least three million are expected to register as electors. This will be an addition to the electoral rolls.”
