Copper coils worth ₹1.28 lakh stolen after transformer vandalised in Raigad

Thieves stole copper coils worth ₹1.28 lakh from a power transformer in Raigad, Maharashtra, disrupting electricity supply and causing financial loss.

NAVI MUMBAI: In a major theft targeting public infrastructure, unidentified thieves vandalised a power transformer and stole copper coils worth ₹1.28 lakh in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, police said.

According to the Khalapur police, the incident occurred around 3 am at a CCTV toll naka in Savroli village. The accused allegedly pulled down a 200 KVA transformer installed on a pole, damaged it, and removed copper coils from inside the unit.

The transformer belongs to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). Officials said the act was carried out without authorisation, posing a risk of disruption to electricity supply in the area, apart from causing financial loss.

A resident of Hiranandani Arora, Varsagaon in Khalapur, lodged a complaint in the matter.

“We suspect the theft was carried out with the intention of extracting and selling copper for monetary gain. Such incidents not only result in financial losses but also affect essential services” a police officer from Khalapur police station said.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
