Loud construction work of radiotherapy building irks studying Nair Hospital docs
In the latest letter to the dean, MARD said construction work be restricted from 9am to 5pm. “The present erratic hours are causing a lot of noise and dust pollution which is making it difficult to study and sleep. It is also taking a toll on our mental health
Mumbai: Construction work at the upcoming radiotherapy building site inside the BYL Nair Hospital has irked the resident doctors whose final post-graduation exams will start in May.
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has written to the dean saying the noise intensity owing to ongoing piling work is above 80 db because of which they can neither study nor sleep. “The work started early this month. Every day, the work starts at 6am and goes on till midnight on most days. It is affecting our sleep and studies. We have written multiple letters to the dean and requested that the piling work should stop at night,” said Dr Vardhaman Rothe, president of MARD (BYL Nair Hospital).
In the latest letter to the dean, MARD said construction work be restricted from 9am to 5pm. “The present erratic hours are causing a lot of noise and dust pollution which is making it difficult to study and sleep. It is also taking a toll on our mental health,” said the letter. The construction site is closer to the resident doctor hostel and resident doctor library.
The hospital is coming up with a 10-storey radiotherapy building with an underground department. The project is supposed to be completed within four years. The state-of-art radiation therapy is set to have Brachytherapy, Cobalt therapy, and linear accelerator (LINAC) for cancer treatments and also includes PET Scan facility, CT Scan along with a post-recovery ward.

{{/usCountry}}Supporting resident doctors, a senior doctor from the hospital said piling work is creating a lot of noise pollution. “The contractor should not be allowed to start the work before 10 am and should stop the work by 9 pm. They work the entire day and night. It is inhuman that resident doctors are unable to rest or study because of the noise. Apart from the resident doctor hostel and library, there are ICUs and wards closer to the construction site. Unlike the resident doctors, their discomfort may not reflect in terms of protest letters but it does not mean we should turn a blind eye to it,” he said.
