NAVI MUMBAI: Even as there has been a controversy over payment of taxes by some industrialists claiming lack of work by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in the MIDC region of Navi Mumbai, the civic body has completed ₹1,520 cr of road concretization while the remaining ₹210 cr worth of road projects are underway in the TTC industrial area.

NMMC, as the nodal agency of the region has gone all out to provide infrastructure and civic services in the TTC industrial area over the years. Under the three phases of its road vision, NMMC has so far constructed 83.98 km concrete roads out of the total of 136 km roads in the region. Work on the remaining roads is being undertaken jointly by NMMC and MIDC.
In the second phase, MIDC is sprucing up 21.28 km long roads. In the third phase work is being undertaken on 30 km long roads. Of this MIDC has undertaken 15 km road work and the rest is being undertaken by NMMC.
Said NMMC city engineer Sanjay Desai, “NMMC has been making efforts to provide pothole free roads in the TTC industrial area. Most of the roads in the region were of asphalt and often didn’t last in the monsoon.”
He added, “NMMC hence decided to concretise the roads to ensure smooth flow of traffic. We are glad that a large part of the work has been completed for which we have already spent ₹1,530 cr.”

The transfers
NMMC has a total of 505 km long road in its jurisdiction of which 136 km is in TTC area. MIDC had in November 2004 transferred all roads in the TTC area except the Shil-Mahape road to NMMC. NMMC has since then been repairing and maintaining the roads. In December 2005, the busy and perennially pothole ridden Thane-Belapur road too was transferred to NMMC. The civic body later concretised this 13.80 km long road spending ₹162 cr.
