Amended IT rules not meant to curb free speech, criticism: Centre to HC
India's Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta, assured the Bombay High Court that new IT rules enabling the government to filter social media for fake news were not meant to curb free speech, criticism, humour or satire targeting even the prime minister. The court questioned the lack of guidelines to determine what is considered fake and misleading. Mehta argued that the rules only apply to fake and false facts, not opinion or criticism. The court noted that the term 'information' in the rules is not limited to facts, but includes opinion, criticism, and parody.

Both factions of the NCP are preparing arguments to support their claim as the 'real' party ahead of the fight over the party name and symbol at the ECI on October 6. One faction questions the legitimacy of the rebel faction's election of Ajit Pawar as national president, while the other faction claims to have elected Pawar in November last year. Panvel City police trace killer 30 years after murder

Special court releases IRS officer Sachin Sawant’s father and brother on bail bond
A special court has granted bail to the father and brother of Indian Revenue Service officer Sachin Sawant in a money laundering case. The court released them on a bail bond under section 88 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Sawant himself was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in June for allegedly generating ₹4.11 crore from illegal sources of income. The court directed the father and brother to be released on provisional cash security of ₹50,000 each, with conditions. The case is based on an FIR registered by the CBI alleging disproportionate assets.
