New Delhi: Two men allegedly robbed jewellery worth over ₹2 crore from a jeweller’s SUV after smashing the rear window, fleeing with three bags and a suitcase in Karol Bagh on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.
Police have detained three people for questioning in connection with the case.
Police said the jeweller, Kanhaiya Lal, came to Delhi on August 18 with his son, Dhruv Soni, and a staff member on a business trip and stayed at a hotel in south Delhi.
On August 19, Lal met several jewellers at the Greater Kailash M Block market before heading to Karol Bagh for another business-related visit, said police.
According to the complaint, he was carrying three backpacks and a suitcase. The backpacks contained gold diamond jewellery, a laptop, and the suitcase contained clothes.
Police said around 5.30 pm, they parked their SUV on Arya Samaj Road, opposite a Canara Bank branch. Lal, his son and the employee left the bags and suitcase inside the vehicle and went to a nearby restaurant.
Police said two men on a motorcycle allegedly followed the SUV. “The suspects used a catapult to break the rear window of the parked SUV and hurriedly took the three bags and suitcase from the SUV and fled the spot on their motorcycle,” said a senior police officer.

{{/usCountry}}When the victims returned around 7.15 pm, they found the vehicle’s rear window shattered and the bags missing.
“A case was registered and an investigation launched. Police inspected the spot and examined CCTV footage from the surrounding area. Two suspects wearing helmets and travelling on a motorcycle were identified.” DCP (Central) Rohit Rajbir Singh said,
The motorcycle was subsequently traced to its registered owner, who, along with his two brothers, has been detained for questioning, the DCP added.
Police said efforts are underway to recover the stolen jewellery and identify any other persons involved in the crime.
Police are also probing a Thursday robbery in the Chanakyapuri area where another jeweller, from Karol Bagh, was targeted by gun-wielding robbers at Simon Bolivar Marg and robbed of diamond jewellery worth ₹59 lakhs. Police are checking whether the complainants in both cases had any link or were being followed by the same men.
