The last one was removed last week at Chunar–Sakteshgarh block sections of Prayagraj Division of NCR.

In a major step towards modernisation of signalling system, the Indian Railways (IR) is well on its path of eliminating the Neale’s Ball Token (NBT) instrument system across its network.

As part of this, the North Central Railways (NCR) has now completely eliminated the NBT instruments system, the last one of which was removed last week at Chunar–Sakteshgarh block sections of Prayagraj Division of NCR. There were 103 block sections having NBT instruments in NCR and over the period of time now all have been removed, informed NCR officials.

“Across India, there are 216 of these instruments in different zones of the IR which are still left to be replaced by modern signalling systems. NCR has now joined the group of other railway zones including Southern Railways, North Eastern Railways, South Central Railway, South Eastern Railway, East Coast Railways, East Central Railway and South East Central Railway which have eliminated this old system of block working and moved on to modern systems,” the officials added.

Now NCR is completely free from this more than 100-year-old signalling equipment. The last train signalling with this system was Train number HP 42. This train was signalled using NBT instruments for the last time from Chunar station at 1pm and at 1.20pm at block hut-R station. The train arrived at Sakteshgarh station at 1.48 pm, added Sharma.

Neale’ Ball Token Instrument was designed by Neale, an engineer with the GIP Railway (present Central Railway). Neale’ Ball Token Instrument is an electromechanically instrument provided at each station on a single line block section. Basically, to enter a block section, a train requires “authority to proceed”.

This NBT was the “tangible authority to proceed” given to the loco pilot which meant that there was no obstruction in the block section and the loco pilot was permitted to cross the station. It required human intervention as this tangible authority had to be transferred from one employee to another.

This has now been replaced by an intangible mode of authority and human intervention has been replaced by electronic means. “Now with the help of Block Proving Axle Counters (BPAC), the system electronically comes to know that there is no obstruction between the two stations and thus “line clear” can be granted to the outgoing train,” said Sharma.

Thus, the train can be given a green advance starter signal (the signal located after the starter signal at a station). This green advance starter signal is now the authority to proceed. Thus, with modernisation, human intervention has been brought to a minimal level leading to better speeds and reliability, he added.
