Robbers loot ₹11 lakh from South Bihar Gramin Bank in Samastipur

Five armed robbers looted 11 lakh from the Mahmada branch of South Bihar Gramin Bank in Bihar’s Samastipur district on Friday morning, police said.

This is the third such incident in March in the district, they said.

According to the bank officials and eyewitnesses, five miscreants on two bikes each, carrying a pistol with their faces covered, entered the bank at 10am and looted 11 lakh from the strong room of the bank at gunpoint.

“Soon as we opened the branch, the criminals entered the bank and looted the cash at gunpoint,” said branch manager Shrawan Kumar.

“After the loot, they downed the shutters from outside and fled,” said a bank official.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) S H Fakri, who reached the bank along with station house officer (SHO) Seema Kumari, said they have launched an investigation into the matter.

“We have begun a probe and the cash looted from the bank is being tallied up with the accounts,” DSP said, adding, “We’ll soon nab the criminals.”

“A team of police have started raids at some possible hideouts,” said the SHO.

Superintendent of police (SP) Vinay Kumar also reached the bank and interrogated the bank officials and a few customers present in the bank at the time of the loot.

Police said that three incidents of bank loot have taken place in Samastipur in March this year. On March 15, miscreants looted 20 lakh from the Harpur Alioth branch of South Bihar Gramin Bank.

Earlier on March 1, criminals looted 9.45 lakh from the Chandchor branch of South Bihar Gramin Bank.
