Police arrest Jhajjar ex-armyman in woman rape-murder case in Haryana

A day after the Jhajjar police exhumed a decomposing body of a 36-year-old woman from a four-foot-deep pit in the fields of a village in the district, the police have nabbed the other accused involved in the crime.
Nitesh, in-charge of the Matanhail police check-post, said they had recovered the woman’s body from one of the fields of an accused Raju, based on his statement. Raju was arrested on Wednesday. The other accused, Rajesh, an ex-armyman, was nabbed on Wednesday late at night. Rajesh quit the army a few years back.
“The woman was allegedly kidnapped, gang-raped and strangled to death by the two accused, who called her to Jhajjar on the pretext of giving her a loan. The duo has confessed to raping and killing her. The victim was working at a private company in Jhajjar and is survived by a minor daughter. Her husband died two years ago. Rajesh was produced before a local court today, which sent him on one-day police remand,” he added.

“During the investigation, it has come to the fore that the accused and the victim fought over money. The woman was facing financial problems after her husband’s death. The woman’s post-mortem was conducted at PGIMS, Rohtak. As of now, we have found the involvement of two men, however, investigations are still on,” the SP added.
A police officer said that the woman came to Jhajjar via a bus.
“As she got off the bus, the duo allegedly kidnapped the victim and raped her. Fearing arrest, they strangled her to death and buried her in one of the fields at Raju’s farm. Raju stayed in the village for 36 days and did not reveal the incident to anyone. The villagers were shocked when the woman’s decomposed body was recovered from his fields,” the official added.
According to the woman’s family, the victim was last seen at her home in Delhi on February 15. Her family said she left for Jhajjar but never returned, and her phone was also switched off. The woman’s family approached the Delhi and Haryana Police. A zero FIR was first lodged in Delhi, and then the case was transferred to Jhajjar Police on February 28.
A police officer said initially, the cops didn’t have enough details about the woman because nobody knew about her.
“After analysing the woman’s call details, Raju’s number was found. When cops called Raju, he misled them and said he had called the victim for some work. The police conducted several raids near the woman’s workplace but returned empty-handed. Raju was called again for sustained questioning, and his version was found to be different from that of his neighbours. He was interrogated for hours, and he eventually confessed to the crime. Raju also revealed the name of the other accused,” said a senior police officer.
