A police constable has been suspended for alleged negligence after a POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012) accused escaped from the lock-up at Yerawada Police Station on February 8, officials said on Saturday.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 7.45 pm when the undertrial accused asked for a bedsheet while lodged in police custody. Instead of handing over the bedsheet inside the lock-up, the on-duty constable allegedly took the accused out and allowed him to go towards the bathroom area. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused reportedly removed the glass panes of the bathroom window and fled.
Taking serious note of the lapse, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Zone IV Chilumula Rajnikanth ordered the suspension of constable Sachin Shinde for dereliction of duty.
Police said the accused, identified as Shailesh Raju Mohite, 19, of Raj Chowk in Yerawada, was arrested on February 5 in a POCSO case. He was remanded to police custody until February 10 by a court.
Meanwhile, the Yerawada police had re-arrested the suspect within a few hours of his escape.
