While the entire nation relished every stroke hit by his son during the assault on the Sri Lankan bowlers in the World Cup final, MS Dhoni’s father, Paan Singh, deliberately missed the live action. Dhoni Sr is as hardcore a cricket buff as they come, but he simply doesn’t have the heart for it when it comes to watching his son’s matches.

“He does not watch when Mahi is playing and that was the case in the final also. Our father’s anxiety level goes very high. His heart beat increases and he fears he will suffer an attack. He makes up by watching the rerun of the game, again and again,” Dhoni's elder brother Narendra told the HT over the phone.

“For us, it is a dream come true. To see India win the World Cup from Mahi’s hands, what else can we ask for?” he said.

“It was a strange World Cup as for the first time in a tournament, Mahi had not contributed with the bat. When he came out at No 5, for us the intent was clear. I told my friends, ‘he may get out but yeh aaj maar ke khelega (he will go all out today).

Does he believe Dhoni is best Indian captain ever? “When Sachin says he is, then where’s the doubt,” he said.
