The flip side of the money-spinning Indian Premier League (IPL) came to the fore on Friday with the Indian cricket board (BCCI) warning youngsters to be careful while signing up with agents offering lucrative contracts.
"It has been brought to our notice that some agents have been contacting junior cricketers from various states, tempting them with a place in one of the eight IPL teams," BCCI chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said in a statement.
While the BCCI is not barring these youngsters from signing contracts with the agents, it wants them to be cautious in their dealings.
HT has learnt that representatives of some of the player-management agencies have been approaching young cricketers and promising IPL contracts provided they sign on the dotted line.
While one agency — claiming to be a talent scout for some of the IPL franchisees — has retained most of the usual clauses in its contract, it also wants the player to cough up 20 per cent of his earnings -- including match fees.
Though agents usually take a cut from a player's off-field earnings, it is unfair on their part to demand a share of match fees.
