The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) kept its date with the Justice RM Lodha committee on Tuesday and agreed to comply with the Supreme Court-appointed panel’s recommendations for reforms in the sports body. BCCI secretary, Ajay Shirke, met the committee members here and requested them to allow the board to furnish its response on the implementation of suggested reforms in 15 days.
“Only BCCI secretary Shirke met the committee and he said he would submit compliance by August 25,” a source told HT. The panel also reportedly gave the board time till October 15 to implement some of the reforms recommended in its report.
The committee had asked the BCCI president, Anurag Thakur, and Shirke to apper before it on Tuesday. However, that had appeared unlikely after the BCCI had decided to follow the advise of former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju to ignore the summons.
The Supreme Court, in its order directing the board, to implement reforms suggested by the Panel, says: “Should any impediments arise, the committee shall be free to seek appropriate directions from this court by filing a status report in that regard.” So, the BCCI would have incurred action from the court if they had not appeared before the panel Tuesday.
Shirke had written to the panel on Sunday night, requesting it to defer Tuesday’s meeting. The request was turned down by the panel. Thakur did not attend and a letter citing his leave of absence due to the parliament session was handed over.
