After nearly a month of dilly-dallying, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opened a channel for hiring a new head coach for the India team.
Newly-elected president Anurag Thakur on Sunday said the Board would be inviting applications for the role, stating that they were looking at all possible options.
“We will advertise for the post of coach today and by June 10 anyone can apply. They can come forward, apply and then we can look at the proposals, who are the applicants and who are best for BCCI,” said Thakur.
This means the Indian team will be without a full-time coach on its short tour of Zimbabwe beginning June 11.
It has been nearly a month since the contract of India’s team director Ravi Shastri came to end. However until now, the Board has not taken any decision to renew his contract or find a replacement.
Names of many former cricketers have been floating. Stephen Fleming, Tom Moody and Rahul Dravid have all been mentioned. Former New Zealand skipper and current Royal Challengers Bangalore coach Daniel Vettori has also come into contention with Test captain Virat Kohli recommending his name.
Now that the BCCI has invited applicants, it remains to be seen whether the batting coach Sanjay Bangar, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar will continue in their respective roles. Their contracts ended at the conclusion of India’s World Twenty20 campaign.
