Board to mull players’ contracts and attributes clause issues

The BCCI meet will discuss issues like the players contracts and the proper implementation of the clause in those contracts.

These include the 'players contracts' (more precisely, the players' retainerships or graded payments) for international cricketers and the proper implementation of the contentious "attributes" clause in those contracts.

The attributes clause basically looks to control the physical representation or "image" of a player or players in endorsements. "We are having a problem with team sponsorships," said an official. "Obviously team sponsors who have paid huge amounts to be BCCI sponsors, have issues with four or more players coming in advertisements like Pepsi and Reebok. Why should we not protect our sponsors, just like the ICC protects theirs, vis-à-vis us?

The money coming from a team sponsor goes into a pool that will benefit all the players, not just top ones. That clause was already there in their contracts but it will now have to be properly implemented and we will try and ensure that not more than two players, maybe three, can appear together in one advertisement. It should not look like the brand they are endorsing sponsors the Indian team."
