Jesse Ryder, architect of New Zealand’s stunning turnaround in the second Test, believes the bowlers have put the Kiwis on top by claiming three Indian wickets which offers them a chance to square the three-match series.
Ryder and Ross Taylor cobbled a record 271-run stand to rescue the hosts who were reeling at 23 for three at a stage. New Zealand went on to amass 619 for nine before declaring their first innings and snaring three Indian wickets to leave the visitors tottering at 79 for three.
“The boys came out and bowled pretty well in the evening and put us on top of the game,” Ryder told reporters after the second day’s play.
Ryder himself played a crucial knock of 201 to resurrect New Zealand before falling to Zaheer Khan, a dismissal that annoyed him so much that he banged the bat on the turf and threw it once he entered the dressing room.
“I got angry with myself. It was a wide half volley and I played it onto the stumps. I was disappointed that having gone so far and having worked so hard to get there, I got out like that. It angered me,” Ryder said.
“It is just that I was angry with myself for getting out the way I did,” he added.
