Finally, better sense seems to have prevailed over the Pakistan team management, what with skipper Shahid Afridi hinting at passing on the wicket-keeping gloves to Umar Akmal from his elder brother Kamran Akmal in their next tie against Zimbabwe on Monday. Ever since damaging his finger during the forfeited Oval Test in 2006 against England, Akmal has dropped more catches and missed more stumpings than he has latched on to.
His presence behind the wicket has cost Pakistan lot of runs and matches, both ODIs and Tests. Yet, quite surprisingly, all skippers and coaches have persisted with him.
While Pakistan have continually turned a blind eye to the fumbling and faltering Akmal behind the wicket, the two 'sitters' he dropped on Monday, which allowed Ross Taylor to hit a match-winning century, has finally woken up everyone to the gravity of the situation.
Coach Waqar Younis admitted the dropped "sitters" "cost Pakistan the game", and, going a step further, hinted at Kamran's ouster from the team. Afridi hinted at a more immediate change, saying the option of Umar keeping the wickets will be explored.
