Jan 6 - Australia beat India by 122 runs in the second Test in Sydney after a number of dubious umpiring decisions. After the match India captain Anil Kumble accuses Australia of bad sportsmanship, saying: "Only one team was playing with the spirit of the game". The BCCI complains to the International Cricket Council (ICC) governing body about Sydney umpires Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson. India spinner Harbhajan Singh is banned for three Tests for racially abusing Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds, a charge the BCCI appeals against.

Jan 7 - India lodge official complaint against spinner Brad Hogg, alleging he verbally abused Kumble. India suspend tour, pending result of Harbhajan's appeal. The ICC resists Indian demands Bucknor is stood down for next week's third Test. Harbhajan cleared to resume playing until after his appeal is heard.
