Chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar has shown an “intent to resign”, Board secretary Niranjan Shah said on Sunday.
The BCCI has asked him to reconsider, but if he does quit, they would find a replacement from the West Zone, Shah added.
Vengsarkar left Kolkata mid-way through the second Test on Saturday, signalling a flashpoint in his increasingly tense relationship with the Board. He is learnt to have been upset at the BCCI’s insistence that the selectors should pick the team for both the Bangalore Test and the tour of Australia in Bangalore on December 5 — Vengsarkar himself had wanted the team for Bangalore to be picked in Kolkata on the final day of the ongoing Test (December 4), and for Australia in Bangalore on December 7.
He informed Board president Sharad Pawar that he was leaving Kolkata immediately and, on reaching Mumbai, apparently sent him a text message hinting at his desire to quit.
“He could have discussed it (the dates) instead of saying anything like this just ahead of an important tour selection,” Shah said. He added that if Vengsarkar did not attend the Bangalore meeting, the other selectors would go ahead and pick the teams without him.
Vengsarkar has been upset over the restrictions the Board has imposed on selectors, including a ban on their writing newspaper columns. He could not be reached for a comment. The other four selectors seemed to be in the dark.
