Bangladesh beat Australia by 5 wickets (DLS method)

Commentary

2:56 PM IST All smiles for Bangladesh - It was Cardiff, 2005, under Habibul Bashar's captaincy, when Bangladesh claimed their first-ever ODI win against Australia. The day when Mohammad Ashraful played a gritty, match-winning knock of 100. It then took them 21 years to win their second. And just around 48 hours later, they have their third. But more importantly, by sealing the series 2-0, they have pulled off a historic bilateral series win over the Aussies, a result that will be cherished for generations in Bangladesh cricket. And now, the third and final ODI presents them the chance to complete a clean sweep against Australia as well. With another ODI series gone in the subcontinent, the Aussies will aim to bounce back and play for pride. They are yet to put on a collective team performance and will look to do so in the 3rd and final ODI which will be played at the same venue, on Sunday, 14th June. The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 5 am GMT. Let's hope rain does not spoil the party and we get a full game that day. Until then, we sign off, only to meet again. Stay safe, cheers!
2:55 PM IST Athar Ali Khan informs that Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the Bangladeshi captain, is unavailable due to a concussion, and Najmul Hossain Shanto will be taking his place for a few words. On being asked about Mehidy's fitness, Shanto reveals that he looks fine and they will observe him closely. Mentions that he might go to the hospital if needed. On the historic series win, he says it means everything and that words cannot quite do it justice. He calls it an amazing feeling and says the way Bangladesh played throughout showed a lot of courage, adding that the hard work put in over the last few months was aimed at exactly this kind of improvement. Says he is proud to be part of this team. On the collective effort, he says playing as a unit is exactly what they want, with everyone looking to contribute across batting, bowling and fielding in every match. He gives credit to the players on the bench as well, saying they helped a lot, and wants the team to keep doing the little things right and keep improving. On the third ODI, he stresses that it is just as important and that they want to carry the same competitive intent into the next game as well.
2:57 PM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - For his outstanding bowling display, Mustafizur Rahman receives the award. He was spotless with the ball and ended up with figures reading 7-2-27-3. Rahman says that he always tries to swing the new ball. Adds that he enjoys bowling with the new ball, and his team required him to bowl at that phase. Ends by saying that his body feels fine, but as a fast bowler, there will always be a few bruises.
3:08 PM IST The captain of Australia - Josh Inglis reflects on the defeat. Mentions that anytime you lose three wickets that early, it's tough to come back from. Adds that Marnus and Bartlett batted really well and that partnership gave them some hope, although it was still below-par. Inglis reckons that if they got through the first few overs, they could have posted a good total as the wicket was still good to bat on. Notes that it was not as bouncy as the previous game. Admits that he got a start but couldn't make it count. Josh shares that there was enough assistance for the seamers and if they could have nicked 2-3 early, they would have been in the game. He feels that they did well in the middle overs to pick up a few wickets, giving them a sniff towards the end. The Aussie skipper ends by saying that they just need to sharpen up and someone needs to step up with the bat. According to him, Bangladesh have outplayed them in both games.
2:38 PM IST ... Time for the post-match Presentation ...
2:38 PM IST Not enough on the board - Australia were in dire straits at 81/6 after a top-order collapse that saw three batters depart without scoring, but Marnus Labuschagne and Xavier Bartlett hauled them back into the contest with a 103-run stand. Bartlett brought up his maiden ODI fifty while Labuschagne ended a 14-innings wait for a half-century in this format, before Taskin Ahmed broke the partnership and struck again off the very next ball. Rain arrived shortly after with Australia on 187/8, and the delay stretched to almost two and a half hours, long enough to ensure Australia would not bat again, trimming the game to 41 overs, with the DLS target of 192 set for Bangladesh.
2:34 PM IST Held their nerves when it mattered - Bangladesh were always in a comfortable position chasing, though Australia refused to go quietly. Green and Zampa chipped in to keep breaking partnerships and reduce the hosts to 144/5, keeping themselves alive in the contest. But with the finish line in sight and 48 needed from that point, Bangladesh stayed composed, content to tick off singles and doubles without taking any risks. Australia needed wickets but could not create the inroads to apply real pressure. Miraz took a nasty blow to the helmet along the way but stayed completely unfazed, and alongside Towhid Hridoy, he put together an unbeaten 51-run stand to see Bangladesh home and into the history books.
2:29 PM IST Shanto-Sarkar alliance keep hosts safe - Bangladesh had a mirroring start to their opponents as they lost the first wicket in the very first over. With overcast conditions and the new ball doing its bit, nipping in and away, with the odd one staying low on bounce, the Aussie bowlers did made life difficult for the batters, asking all the tough questions. However, Soumya Sarkar and Najmul Hossain Shanto rode some difficult chances and kept the scoreboard ticking along at a good clip. Both formed a crucial and defining 86-run stand before Renshaw fished out Sarkar after a fine knock on comeback, and that breakthrough saw Bangladesh slipping a bit from 86/1 to 98/3 with both set batters dismissed in a rather quick time.
2:59 PM IST History rewritten in Dhaka - It's a special, special day in the history of Bangladesh cricket. They played their first ODI against Australia back in 1990, and what a journey it has been since. Won their first-ever ODI over them at home a couple of days back, and today, they have conquered the Aussies on home soil to clinch their first-ever ODI series win against Australia. And fittingly, it was skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz who struck the winning runs, doing so after taking a nasty blow to the helmet. A moment Bangladesh will cherish for a long, long time. Delights and smiles all around the Bangladeshi camp, and rightly so. This is also their fourth consecutive ODI series win at home, proving just how dominating they have been on their own soil. For Australia, it has been a trip to forget. Their struggles in the subcontinent show no sign of letting up. A series defeat in Pakistan, and now another loss here on Bangladeshi soil.

SIX! Makes the most of the Free Hit. Bangladesh are a couple of hits away from a famous series win now. Speared on a length, on the pads. Towhid Hridoy makes good use of the pace, nails the pick-up shot and whips it over deep backward square leg for a biggie.

Riley Meredith to Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 2 runs

Sharp short ball climbing at the shoulder height of the batter. Mehidy Hasan Miraz is hurried on the pull shot but gets a top edge towards backward square leg for a single. Oh, it's called a No Ball as there were three fielders behind square on the leg side.

2:16 PM IST Australia select their preferred ball that will be used for the rest of the innings. Also, Riley Meredith replaces Adam Zampa. Once again, the zinger bail is not working, and the umpires wait for the replacement. Not for the first time in this game. The issue has been resolved and we are good to go again.

Nathan Ellis to Towhid Hridoy, 2 runs

ballImg140.1kph

Excellent running! Good length on the middle stump, Hridoy stays put and turns it wide of square leg and they show good urgency to hustle back for the second run. Matthew Short slides to stop the ball and throws it to the keeper. Inglis breaks the stumps in a flash but Hridoy is comfortably in by then.

FOUR LEG BYES! Runs away and Bangladesh inch closer to script history! A poor delivery from Ellis. Short of a length, on the pads. Towhid Hridoy misses the flick and the ball ricochets off the thigh pad before running behind to the deep fine leg fence.

2:12 PM IST The physio comes in for the mandatory concussion check. He will now ask a few questions to Mehidy Hasan Miraz as per protocol. Not good signs as Mehidy is down on the ground, feeling really uneasy. The stretcher comes out as the reserve players and medical staff surround the Bangladesh skipper. The Australian team doctor also comes in to offer his expertise. Tense faces all around the stadium, but hopefully it is nothing serious. Positive visuals now as we see Mehidy Hasan Miraz back on his feet, communicating with his partner, and also changing his pair of gloves. All good to resume now.

Nathan Ellis to Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 1 run

ballImg133.4kph

Ouch! Surprise bumper on the bodyline, and it springs up from the pitch. Mehidy Hasan Miraz is completely taken aback as he takes his eyes off the ball while attempting the pull shot, but is beaten. The ball smashes hard onto the side of the helmet and lobs over and to the left of the backward point fielder for a leg bye. A concussion test will follow for Miraz and he looks shaken by that proper blow.

Mosaddek Hossain is sucked on the front foot to block but plays inside the line and is hit on the back thigh. The impact seems to be outside off here.

1:14 PM IST DRINKS! A wicket at the right time for Australia, but they need to keep chipping in with as they don't have many runs to play with here. The responsibility once again falls on the shoulders of Towhid Hridoy and the new batter, Mosaddek Hossain, the hero of the last game. It was this duo who got them out of the trouble while setting up a target, but now they are chasing, and that pressure is different. An exciting phase of cricket awaits us.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Sizzling delivery from Green and he strikes big. A wicket at a very crucial time for the Aussies. The ball grazes the gloves and lobs behind to the right of the keeper, where Josh Inglis takes a fine catch. Bangladesh are 122/4, needing 70 more runs from 106 balls.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! That is a superb review by the Aussie skipper. Riley Meredith lands this short of a length and just around off, gets some lift off the deck. Najmul Hossain Shanto stays back and slashes at it, but is tucked up for space, and it seems the ball zipped past the outside edge. However, Josh Inglis grabs it behind the stumps and appeals for the caught behind. It is turned down. Meredith looks unsure about it, but Inglis takes the review right away as he believes he heard something. UltraEdge shows a big spike when the ball is next to the bat and the on-field call is changed. Maiden ODI wicket for Meredith. Both the set batters are gone now.

Xavier Bartlett to Najmul Hossain Shanto, no run

Missing the leg stump! Fractionally fuller on the leg stump line, curving back in. Najmul Hossain Shanto's head falls over while attempting the flick and the ball thuds the front pad. Once again, the appeal goes around for LBW and this time, the finger is raised. Australians are joyous but Shanto has gone upstairs almost instantly for a review. Flat line on the UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows the impact is on umpire's call and the ball is projected to miss the leg stump by a fair bit. So the on-field decision is overturned and Shanto survives. What an action-packed first over! Bartlett starts with a wicket-maiden.

11:23 AM IST Is that out? Najmul Hossain Shanto has taken a review for an LBW decision, given Out on the field. UltraEdge comes up with a flat line while Ball Tracking shows it to be missing the leg stump. Good review from Shanto and the on-field call it overturned.

DROPPED! An opportunity, but goes down this time! Very full and around off. The ball holds a bit on the surface and Shanto mistimes the straight drive to the left of the bowler. Tanzid Hasan shapes up to drill it over the bowler's head, but hits it off the toe end and chips it straight to the bowler. Massive appeal for LBW, but not given. Xavier Bartlett is very keen to take the review, but Inglis seems reluctant. So they do not review. On the money, is Bartlett. Swings one back in from the leg stump line, on a fuller length. Tanzid Hasan tries to flick it across, but plays all over and is struck on the front pad.
