Hobart Hurricanes beat Perth Scorchers by 8 wickets

Commentary

8:26 AM IST GOT HIM, CHOPPED ON! Want to know who? We will give you a hint. It is the new opener picked up by Australia to replace Nathan McSweeney for the remaining two Tests against India. For more information, quickly hop into the Sydney Smash matchcentre!
8:25 AM IST Hobart Hurricanes' MITCHELL OWEN HAS BEEN NAMED AS THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his wonderful unbeaten 101 (64). Owen says that it feels nice to get the first win on the board. Being asked about how to approach the chase, Mitchell says that he just tried to first put bat on ball and then accelerate as he got set. Believes that he was in much better mental space in this game as compared to the previous match and was able to bat freely. Credits the coaching staff for bringing him in the playing XI and also pushing him up the order, as the Hurricanes are keen to bring in more allrounders into their playing XI. Hopes to have a good summer from here on for himself and his team.
8:24 AM IST ... THE PRESENTATION ...
8:24 AM IST Earlier in the day, Hobart Hurricanes bowled well to restrict Perth Scorchers to a chaseable total. At 110/2 after 13 overs, 180, perhaps even 200 was loading but the 'Canes executed their death-over skills to perfection. The Scorchers did not lose wickets in a hurry as such but could never find big overs in succession. Please stay tuned to know who would be the Player Of The Match.
8:23 AM IST The Hobart Hurricanes lost Caleb Jewell early but it seemed like they had plenned this run chase well. Mitchell Owen was batting beautifully while Shai Hope did well to support him nicely. Their 101-run stand ensured that the Hurricanes were always around that required rate, despite a few frugal overs being bowled in tandem by the Scorchers. Big day for Owen, who will hope to build on this knock.
8:19 AM IST 155 has been the average first-innings score in the last 10 T20s at this venue but it did seem a few runs short. However, Perth Scorchers rallied themselves around and though they did not pick up much wickets, they ensured that the game never went away from them. Probably Lance Morris was the weak link in this game. Cooper Connolly started really well but could not quite continue with the same rhythm. Jason Behrendorff and Ashton Agar were excellent but could not get continuous support. As far as Australia are concerned, Jhye Richardson looked sharp and in good shape ahead of the MCG Test next week.
8:17 AM IST Joyous scenes at the Bellerive Oval. Mitchell Owen is still soaking it up and although one might say that this win belongs to the Hobart bowlers, the Scorchers fought tooth and nail and eventually, Owen was the one standing between them and victory. His mates rush out to the middle from the dugout and embrace him. This means a lot to everyone.

Lance Morris to Mitchell Owen, 1 run

HOBART HURRICANES WIN BY 8 WICKETS! A short ball, outside off, Owen backs away and tries to slap it on the off side. Mistimes it, but gets enough to clear the inner circle and take the single. That's all Hobart Hurricanes need to get on the board in BBL 2024-25!

FOUR! HUNDRED FOR OWEN! The crowd is on its feet. A new star is born - Mitchell Owen. Take a bow, sir. A highly entertaining innings. The Free Hit is an overpitched delivery outside off and Mitchell Owen drives it gloriously through the covers! Scores level now.

NO BALL! Oh that is a sorry state for Morris. He bowls a high full toss, around middle and Ben McDermott is totally surprised. But he manages to fend it away to the leg side and gets Owen back on strike with a single. FREE HIT loading, with Owen on 96!

8:12 AM IST Lance Morris should be bowling the last over, unless Turner has some other inspirations. He has gone for 32 in his 3 overs but there is no option left, unless the skipper wants to bowl himself. Yes, it is Morris. 6 to defend.

WIDE! Goes for the wide yorker, outside off, but bowls it too far outside off, does Richardson. Mitchell Owen stands his ground and tries to reach it but misses.

8:06 AM IST Who will bowl the 19th over? Normally the best bowler bowls the penultimate over in a run chase in white-ball cricket. So Jhye then? Indeed, it is Jhye Richardson. 3-0-25-0 so far.

OUT! A mishit and the partnership has been broken here! Finally some respite for Perth Scorchers! Jason Behrendorff comes from over the wicket and bowls on hard length, outside off, angling away to the batter as he looks to punch it over cover from the back foot. The ball takes an extra bounce as it gets hit on the upper half of the bat and goes in the air. Ashton Turner takes it at mid off comfortably. Shai Hope departs for 38 (35) and the 101 stand has been broken. Hobart Hurricanes need another 23 from 20 balls. Is there still some life left in the game?

DROPPED? Oh dear - this might have been the game changer! Slower ball, outside off, nearly a yorker, Hope reached out and carved it towards backward point. 7:51 AM IST Power Surge time? The 'Canes are in a strong position, but don't forget, their opening match was a blunder for them and they need to improve their net run rate. 7:31 AM IST DRINKS BREAK. A good last 3 overs for the Hobart Hurricanes. They have scored 33 in those, getting the required rate under 8.  When the two left-arm spinners, Agar and Connolly were bowling, it seemed like the Scorchers were piling on the pressure but Owen counter-attacked Connolly in his second over and the scenario changed. 7:11 AM IST Finn Allen is mic'd up and talking to the on-air commentators. Allen says that it feels nice to get a wicket on the last ball of the Powerplay and hopes that the team builds on this. Admits that their batting was a struggle, facing a pitch totally different from what they expected. On his own batting, Allen is cheeky and says that though he has not yet scored much in the BBL, he wants to focus on his strike rate. Calls the conditions as blustery but definitely not bad. On being asked about how he felt on scoring a boundary on the first ball, Finn says that he felt like Joe Root after that shot but on the next ball, reality kicked in! Ends by saying that he is fortunate to be a part of a strong team like that of the Perth Scorchers. Cooper Connolly into the attack as well.

More than half a shout for caught behind from Josh Inglis, the keeper but turned down. Quicker one from Agar, angled just down the leg side, Hope fails to flick it away and it is well collected behind the stumps by Inglis. No wide given either, so, there must have been bit of a thigh pad.

7:08 AM IST Well, the Scorchers just about keep themselves in the game with that wicket on the last ball of the Powerplay. The 'Canes are off to a good start here, making good use of the new ball. Time for some consolidation from their point of view and from the Scorchers' point of view, they would aim to get two new batters in the middle. Shai Hope walks in at number 3, replacing Caleb Jewell. Ashton Agar into the attack as well.

Jason Behrendorff has got them a breakthrough! Short of a length, just outside off, from over the wicket, straightens off the deck. Caleb Jewell goes for a cut shot from the back foot but he only manages to get an inside edge onto the stumps. Jewell departs for 7 (9) and 32/1 is the score after the Powerplay for Hobart Hurricanes. They need another 124 from 96 balls.

SIX! Easy as from Mitchell Owen! The 'wild thing' starts off with an overpitched delivery on middle and leg at around 140 clicks. Owen clears the front leg and pumps it over wide long on for his second biggie in that region.

6:58 AM IST Won't suspect a bowling change here. Australia need Jhye to bowl as much as possible, if he has to be in line to feature in the 4th Test. Especially, having returned from a shoulder injury. So long spells would be the order of the day. Given that this is a T20, 4 is the most he can bowl, but 1-over spells won't benefit him. Okay, time for me to retire the thought that I know cricket. Lance Morris into the attack.
