Sydney Sixers beat Sydney Thunder by 5 wickets

Commentary

12:06 PM IST Wow! That really ends a fine Super Saturday. First, Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers played out, well, we can still call it a close game while the Sydney Smash was a toast for the weekend. That's all we have for today. Coming up next on the BBL, is Brisbane Heat taking on Adelaide Strikers at the 'Gabba, on Sunday, 22nd December, 2024. If Heat win, they will definitely top the table while if the Strikers win, they might still see Sixers atop. Also, given the amount of rain we have had over the last week or so at the 'Gabba, how will Sunday hold up? All this and much more - you will definitely find in our preview while our build up will begin way before 8.15 am GMT (1345 IST). In the meantime, you can also catch action from the ODI series between India Women and West Indies Women and also, the ODI series between South Africa and Pakistan. Enjoy. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
12:13 PM IST Sydney Sixers' BEN DWARSHUIS IS THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his all-round display of 2/26 and an unbeaten 20 (8). He says that as a player you play for these moments and as moments go, this was a big one for himself and Jordan Silk. He then credits Chris Green for the way he bowled that final over but is thankful that they got over the line. Adds that he just tried to stand still and swing hard at the ball. Mentions that he was a bit disappointed with his first 2 overs, so, it was nice to bounce back in the Power Surge, which is an area they want to improve on.
11:53 AM IST ... THE PRESENTATION ...
11:53 AM IST Earlier in the day, Sydney Sixers came back after a poor first 10 overs, restricting the Thunder to 163. It was still a decent score, but to concede just 57/3 in the last 8 overs was phenomenal. Akeal Hosein, Ben Dwarshuis and Jack Edwards were at the centre of that choke. For Sydney Thunder, only two batters played well - Cameron Bancroft unbeaten on 70, while Oliver Davies made 47. However, once Davies fell, the runs stopped coming. 70 does look good against Bancroft but one now feels that had he accelerated a bit more in those death overs, 163 could have become 180. Please stay tuned for the post-match presentation...
11:50 AM IST Decent bowling effort from Sydney Thunder but they will be disappointed with their fielding. They dropped as many as 4 catches that hurt them badly. Chris Green was the one bowler who went for plenty, albeit he did well in that last over, barring one ball. Lockie Ferguson was fast, Nathan McAndrew was accurate while Daniel Sams created opportunities - but they would have liked more wickets.
11:49 AM IST However, the Thunder were being rewarded for their discipline. Eventually, the Sixers started to lose patience and kept throwing their wickets away. However, towards the end, Ben Dwarshuis' cameo of 20 (8) which included a first-ball six off Lockie Ferguson and a penultimate-ball six off Chris Green helped the Magenta team cross the line. It was a rare game where threre were plenty of starts for the Sixers - none making it big - but almost everyone contibuting in the top 5 - and that made the difference.
11:46 AM IST 163 was supposed to be an above-par score and Sydney Thunder definitely made it look that way, with their bowling. They were not able to pick up early wickets as such but they did not let the game slip away either. Thunder focussed on maintaining tight lines while the Sixers focussed on building partnerships. Neither side was giving an inch. Disciplined bowling gave the Thunder regular breakthroughs, but it was not in clusters. First, Josh Philippe at the top and later, Jordan Silk at the end, ensured that partnerships were brewing and there was no collapse.
11:43 AM IST Wow. Can't help but go back to that first ball of the 20th over. Should Jordan Silk have taken the second? But he trusted Ben Dwarshuis after his big six against Lockie Ferguson on the very first ball and it was Dwarshuis' six on the penultimate ball which got victory right on the doorstep! Also, those two wide calls from the umpire in that final over. There might be a talk for some time from both camps regarding the same. The first was definitely a wide but the second one - ooohh - touch and go. 10 needed from 3 became 8 from 3 and the equation and the complexion changed.
11:40 AM IST Phew. For the time being, forget the result. Wherever you are, please stand up and applaud the teams. 240 legal balls, 327 runs and 10 wickets. Thunder made 163/5 while Sixers made 164/5, with both being separated by a wafer-thin margin! What a great game of cricket. Take a bow, players. Thank you for such entertainment.

Chris Green to Ben Dwarshuis, 1 run

ballImg94.6kph

Sydney Sixers has won this game on the last ball! Drags his length this time, quick, around middle, Ben Dwarshuis clips it wide of square leg, cautiously under pressure and runs off for a quick single. SYDNEY SIXERS WIN BY 5 WICKETS with many ups and downs!

11:37 AM IST Hoo hoo! 1 needed from 1 ball. Do we have a Super Over in store? As early as game number 8? Warner, Billings and Green have a chat. Tension in both camps. Watch out for a run out.

19.5

Chris Green to Ben Dwarshuis, 6 runs

ballImg102.8kph

SIX! OMG! Ben Dwarshuis has hit the giant six of the night under pressure! A low full toss from around the wicket, on middle, Ben Dwarshuis waits it and slogs it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. Scores are on level and they just need a single to win this off!

1
19.4

Chris Green to Jordan Silk, 1 run

ballImg101.3kph

This time he connects it! Again a quick flatter full fall, wide outside off, Jordan Silk gets a thick outside edge to short third for a quick single as he looks to go over cover.

WD
19.4

Chris Green to Jordan Silk, 1 run

WIDE! Again a wide has been called and this time, the Thunder players aren't happy at all! A yorker, wide outside off, just outside the line, Jordan Silk moves across to reach out on the ball but fails to do so. Questionable call, as Silk moved across but the umpire's decision is final and there is no review for wides and no balls in BBL!

WD
19.4

Chris Green to Jordan Silk, 1 run

ballImg103.0kph

WIDE! Under pressure, Green has gone over the line! A quick flat ball, wide outside off, Jordan Silk doesn't offer any shot at it as the umpire has called it a wide.

1
19.3

Chris Green to Ben Dwarshuis, 1 run

ballImg101.3kph

Yorker, around off, Ben can only squeeze it through point for a single. The crowd loves it. 10 needed from 3 balls!

2
19.2

Chris Green to Ben Dwarshuis, 2 runs

ballImg101.9kph

Landed outside off, carved over cover, to the other side of the fielder, to his left, for another couple. 11 needed from 4 deliveries now.

2
19.1

Chris Green to Ben Dwarshuis, 2 runs

ballImg97.2kph

Big call from Silk. Full and wide outside off, Ben Dwarshuis throws his bat at it and slices the ball over point. One would have thought Silk would keep the strike but he is happy to respond to Dwarshuis' call to take the second. 150 UP FOR SYDNEY SIXERS. 13 more needed from 5 balls.

11:31 AM IST Will it be Green to bowl the final over? Unbelievable stuff. 234 legal balls done and we still don't know who will win! It is Chris Green. 3-0-31-0 so far. Can he defend 14? Thunder scored 14 in their final over. Sixers need 15.

A very good ball to end the 19th over. Just a single off it! Full ball, around off, from over the wicket, Ben Dwarshuis drills it to mid off for a single. Thunder have 14 runs to defend!

Short of a length, around middle, Jordan Silk keeps it down somehow to short fine leg for a quick single.

18.4

Lockie Ferguson to Jordan Silk, no run

Slower length ball, just outside off, stays low in bounce, Jordan Silk gets foxed up by the pace as he looks to sweep it. The ball zips past the off stump.

1
18.3

Lockie Ferguson to Ben Dwarshuis, 1 run

On middle and leg, Dwarshuis clips it through square leg. He takes the single and wants the second, but Silk rightly sends him back!

6
18.2

Lockie Ferguson to Ben Dwarshuis, 6 runs

SIX! Holy cow! It is not Ben Dwarshuis, but big Dwarshuis who has come out to bat! A half volley, around middle and leg, targetting the stumps but Ben is ready for it. Watches the ball, gets underneath it and swings it massively over long on! 18 needed from 10 balls now.

11:28 AM IST Ben Dwarshuis walks in next at number 7, replacing Lachlan Shaw.
W
18.1

Lockie Ferguson to Lachlan Shaw, no run

ballImg123.8kph

OUT! BOWLED! Ferguson comes and Ferguson strikes! Pace does the trick. A length ball, fast and straight, Lachlan Shaw swings but misses. The ball doesn't and hits the timber. You miss, I hit stuff from the Kiwi. The quickfire stand of 32 has been broken with Shaw making only 8 (7). Sydney Sixers are 140/5 and need another 24 from 11 balls!

11:26 AM IST Who bowls the crucial 19th over? Lockie or Green? Does Warner back on Lockie to bowl a tight over so that Green has roughly 20 to defend? Or the opposite? It will be Lockie Ferguson with the game on the line. 3-0-23-1 so far.

FOUR! Nice Touch! Goes fuller on the pads, around leg, from over the pads, straightens off the deck, slower in pace, Jordan Silk waits for it as he clips it over the head of short fine leg for a boundary to end the over. Sydney Sixers now need 24 off 12 balls!

Daniel Sams to Jordan Silk, no run

ballImg105.6kph

On a good length, wide outside off, angling away, Jordan Silk withdraws his bat at the last moment to make it wide but it is well inside the tramp line. A dot!

Daniel Sams to Lachlan Shaw, no run

ballImg106.3kph

Nearly a blinder! Everything is happening. Sams bowls a cutter, around off and Lachlan Shaw looks to defend. But the ball holds off the surface and comes slowly, spooning back off the face of the bat. Sams flies to his left, attempting a one-hander but cannot get to the ball!

1
17.2

Daniel Sams to Jordan Silk, 1 run

ballImg127.6kph

Full, on middle, clipped through mid-wicket for a single. 29 more needed from 16 balls.

0
17.1

Daniel Sams to Jordan Silk, no run

ballImg108.1kph

DROPPED! Sams will be disappointed with that. He is a very athletic fielder. Full, on middle and leg, Jordan Silk powers it straight back to Sams, who is going to his right in his followthrough. The ball comes straight back at him but his fingers are in the wrong position, pointing skywards. Normally, these either stick or they don't.

11:22 AM IST 30 needed from the last 3 overs. The Sixers have scored 33 in their last 3. Still nothing to choose between these teams! Daniel Sams is back on. 3-0-23-1 so far.

4
16.5

Nathan McAndrew to Jordan Silk, 4 runs

ballImg120.8kph

FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for Jordan Silk! Back of a length, around middle and leg, angling in from over the wicket, Jordan Silk is already deep in the crease as he is waiting for that length. He punishes it wide of deep mid-wicket fence for another boundary.

4
16.4

Nathan McAndrew to Jordan Silk, 4 runs

ballImg117.8kph

FOUR! A boundary to follow that biggie! Punched it wide of mid on! On a good length, around middle and off, slower in pace, Jordan Silk opens up and makes room to pulls it to long on fence for a boundary.

Nathan McAndrew to Jordan Silk, 6 runs

ballImg133.3kph

SIX! CLOBBERED! That was clean by Silk. A length ball, around off, Jordan Silk backed away slightly, got underneath the ball and swung it cleanly over mid-wicket. Possibly the biggest hit of the night. 39 more needed from 21 balls now.

1
16.2

Nathan McAndrew to Lachlan Shaw, 1 run

ballImg119.3kph

A short ball, at the body, Lachlan Shaw swivels to pull but is beaten for pace. Somehow manages to get it away on the leg side and runs through for the single.

A length ball, around off, Jordan Silk throws the kitchen sink at this one, aiming to go down the ground, but there is no timing. Just a single.

FOUR! What a way to get off the mark! Overpitched, outside off, Lachlan Shaw comes forward and threads it to the right of mid off and bags himself a boundary!

15.2

Lockie Ferguson to Moises Henriques, no run

ballImg123.9kph

OUT! CAUGHT! Well, Henriques might have had the luckiest break in his career an over ago, but now, his luck has run out. Ferguson comes charging in and hits the deck hard, with a knuckle ball, from a back of a length. Moises Henriques backs away and looks to go over cover but the heavy ball with lack of pace forces him to do the hard work. He miscues it and the ball goes off the top edge, straight up in the air and Cameron Bancroft makes no mistake at cover. The skipper departs for 17 (22) and Sydney Sixers are 108/4, needing another 56 from 28 balls!

1
15.1

Lockie Ferguson to Jordan Silk, 1 run

ballImg123.9kph

On a good length, around off, cutting back in, no pace given. Jordan Silk backs away to the leg side, waits for the ball to arrive and punches it through point for a single.

11:14 AM IST Time for a PJ. If Sam Billings and Tanveer Sangha were to play in the Indian T20 League now, which team would they feature in? Lucknow! Because in Lucknow, there is a famous saying in Hindi - 'PEHLE AAP. NAHI, PEHLE AAP'. Meaning, 'You first. No, you first.'  The Sixers finally take their Power Surge. Lockie Ferguson will bowl the first of those 2 overs. 2-0-13-0 so far.

Tanveer Sangha to Moises Henriques, no run

What happened here? That is the luckiest Moises Henriques would have ever got in his cricketing career. Short ball on leg, this one holds in the deck and spins away and Henriques looks to pull it off the back foot. He ends up slicing it up and towards the silly point region. Sam Billings comes forward for the catch but so does Tanveer Sangha and they put each other off. No one goes for it in the end and that is simply a howler from the Thunder's point of view.

11:08 AM IST Time for the Power Surge? Not yet. Tanveer Sangha returns. 3-0-21-0 so far.

Nathan McAndrew to Moises Henriques, no run

OUT! RUN OUT! 87 STRIKES! An unlucky number in Australia. A moment of brilliance from the Thunder skipper David Warner and Jack Edwards has to walk back after a solid start. Nathan McAndrew drops the length back and bowls it on off, Henriques uses his feet to come forward and taps it into the off side before calling for the single. However, Warner attacks the ball aggressively and picks it up in a flash before throwing it at the keeper's end and he scores a direct hit. The third umpire is called in but Edwards had already started to walk back and the replays confirm the same. Edwards departs for 28 (18) and Sydney Sixers are 87/3, needing another 77 from 53 balls.

10:57 AM IST A frustrated Daniel Hughes is having a chat. He points to left shoulder, which is covered in a sling, fractured while attempting a diving stop in the previous game. Informs that he is out for 6 weeks and hopes to bide his time by watching some cricket. Feels that the game is in the balance but believes his side can win, if the batters keep their cool. Nathan McAndrew returns as well. 2-0-9-0 so far. Dear me, is that a run out? Warner is celebrating while Edwards is walking back! The break breaks the stand!

10:52 AM IST DRINKS BREAK. We mentioned that it was a tug of war at the innings break. 30 overs into the match, the situation is no different. This is one of those unforgettable Sydney Smash matches, where neither opposition is giving an inch. If any, the three dropped catches might just make Thunder feel bad about their fielding, but the game is sitting nicely on the balance. One thing the Sixers have done well is not lose wickets in clusters in the first 10 overs. They have had meaningful partnerships so far. For Thunder, Warner has rotated his bowlers quite efficiently, not letting the batters settle to one particular bowler. 85 needed from 60 balls, 8 wickets in hand and we might have to wait for legal ball number 240 to actually understand who is going to the top of the table. Chris Green to Jack Edwards, 2 runs

Watch out, everyone! What was Sherfane Rutherford actually doing out there? Outside off, Jack Edwards punched it towards cover and set off for a single. Rutherford came charging in from cover and instead of under-arming it to Sam Billings, fired a powerful throw. Billings thought it better to save himself and nutmegged it. The ball went between his leaping legs and just missed the stumps. By the time short fine leg could get across, the batters pinched the second.

10:42 AM IST The skipper, Moises Henriques, walks in next at number 4, replacing Josh Philippe. Chris Green is back on as well. 1-0-14-0 so far.

OUT! CAUGHT! Daniel Sams is absolutely pumped with that wicket. Another slower one at just 102 kph, floated up very full and on off. Josh Philippe stays leg side of the ball and swings across the line, only to slice it off the toe end of the blade and wide of short third. Tanveer Sangha moves swiftly to his right and takes a simple catch as Philippe departs for 35 (27) and the Sixers are 59/2 at the end of 8 overs.

Daniel Sams to Josh Philippe, no run

Excellent stop by David Warner. Age is just a number. Slower ball, outside off, fuller in length, Josh drives it through the covers but the Thunder skipper dives to his left and makes a terrific stop. He is like another Junior. Slips, cover, mid-wicket, long on, long off. Give him short leg or silly point and he will pick out blinders over there too.

Tanveer Sangha to Josh Philippe, 1 run

OUT!, MISCOMMUNICATION AND VINCE IS RUN OUT! So that dropped catch does not cost the Thunder. Not sure how did Vince think there was a single on offer. Down the leg side, Josh Philippe looked to tuck it to the leg side but missed. The ball deflected off his pads and went behind. Now, Vince wanted the single but Philippe was busy searching for the ball. He responded though, taking a couple of steps but then started to look for the ball. Taking those two steps as a yes, Vince continued running, till he reached a point where he could have actually congratulated Philippe on locating the ball. He had to turn back and by then, Sam Billings, the keeper, got to the ball. Picked it up in a flash and fired a throw at the bowler's end. Tanveer Sangha kept his cool and collected the throw, taking the bails off. The third umpire wanted to check whether the run out was clean and hence there was a small delay, but the first replay confirmed it easily. Wide signalled as well. James Vince wastes his start on 13 (14) and Sydney Sixers are 34/1. They need another 130 from 94 balls.

DROPPED, SIX! How on earth did Oliver Davies miss that? Were the ropes playing on his mind? A short ball, around off, Josh Philippe rocks back and pulls. But he does not quite get the elevation. The ball is travelling flat towards deep mid-wicket, where Davies runs to his left but then, perhaps jumps just a bit casually in the end, or maybe, cautiously, to ensure that the momentum does not take him beyond the ropes. But the ball rockets into his palms and bursts beyond the ropes!
