Chowdhury, 24, was admitted to the Ruby General Hospital, where Dr D Chatterjee said the cricketer had suffered thoracic vertebral fracture and acute lungs injury.

“His condition is critical. The spinal cord injury has developed paraplegia of limbs. He has been put on ventilator with respiratory support,” Dr. Chatterjee added.

Hospital sources said Chowdhury was driving a Toyota Innova, which went out of control and rammed into a tree near Kasba Golpark. Chowdhury played in Bengal’s practice T20 match at the Eden Gardens in the morning.

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) sources said Chowdhury then picked up his friends from Golf Green and was driving to a cinema hall in Lake Town when the accident took place.

This is Chowdhury’s third season in first class cricket.
