Pietersen used a profanity in a Twitter posting that was quickly deleted ahead of the official announcement.

"It came out in the way that I didn't want it to come out," Pietersen said. "It was something that wasn't meant for the public domain and I apologize for it entering the public domain and I also want to apologize for the language I used.

"It wasn't anything against the England selectors or the England setup. I was pretty upset about my own form and frustrated about it too."

The batsman spoke to Surrey's website before making his first appearance for the London club at the Oval as part of a loan from Hampshire.

The England and Wales Cricket Board hopes the loan will help Pietersen reverse a poor run of form with the bat which has seen him fail to pass 100 in almost two years.
