First Test ends in a boring draw

At 3.28 pm, just over an hour before the official close of play, the agony was over. After a meaningless day's play, the first Test of the Future Cup ended in a draw.

At the end of the match, after conceding an 87-run lead in the first innings, South Africa had scored 331 for five. Opening batsman Neil McKenzie remained not out on 155. Wicketkeeper Mark Boucher was accompanying him at the other end on 11.

In a match that has seen a streak of batting records right from day one, the last of the records was on Sunday afternoon when the highest run aggregate was recorded at Chepauk. The previous highest aggregate of 1,488 for the loss of 32 wickets was during the tied Test between India and Australia in 1986-87. This Test saw a total of 1,498 runs being scored for the loss of only 25 wickets.

This reflected the batsmanp-friendly nature of the wicket. And if the wickets in Ahmedabad and Kanpur also turn out to be like this one, then it will be a very bad advertsiment for the game.
