The decision to keep Sourav Ganguly out of the Rest of India squad for the coming Irani Trophy might have had a hidden message in it, but the former India captain has plainly refused to see it.
The resilient southpaw looks in no mood to give up and already has his plans in place. To begin with, he will be playing in the JP Atray Tournament in Punjab with an obvious intention to give himself some useful practice ahead of the series against Australia.
What makes his initiative really surprising is that there isn't any team from Bengal in the tournament. Nevertheless, Ganguly, apparently desperate to keep himself in touch and shape, decided to go out all by himself and play for whatever team was available.
Sushil Kapoor, the tournament's organising secretary, said the left-hander personally called up BCCI joint secretary MP Pandove and expressed his desire to play in the tournament. The former Indian skipper was promptly drafted into LIC, a local team. Ranadeb Bose, the Bengal seamer, will also represent LIC.
LIC is understandably elated at the surprise boost. The players can't wait to step on the field with Ganguly by their side. "It's a matter of huge pride and joy for us that a player of the stature of Sourav Ganguly will play from our club. The boys are mad with excitement and are looking forward to that once in a lifetime moment," said LIC secretary Deepinder Singh.
