Piyush Chawla looked pleasantly surprised with his selection to the T20 squad for the World Cup. "I had a 50-50 chance given how I had performed in the Ranji Trophy, County and now in the IPL," he said. The leggie felt that it was probably his batting that gave him an edge over the two other spinners in the reckoning - Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha. "We share a healthy competition and it brings out the best in us. What tipped the balance in my favour perhaps is my batting. I have had a decent season with the bat. It has must have made some difference," he said.

Chawla had been out of the India reckoning for some time now and didn't look in contention until this selection. "It was frustrating to be away from the squad, but I worked really hard. I played lot of domestic cricket, went for a stint in County cricket and played several matches for my office. All this has paid of."

The leggie feels he has returned as a better bowler. "People would often say that my leg spinner doesn't turn, but I worked hard to make it turn. Besides, now I can bowl according to situation and have the variations to keep batsmen guessing," he said.
