The International Cricket Council is likely to reap a windfall this week when it awards its largest-ever media rights contract – expected to bring it around 2 billion dollars – for the eight-year period from 2015 to 2023.
ICC has received bids from 17 broadcasters across different territories after it announced its tender in July. The bids are likely to be finalised when ICC chairman N Srinivasan arrives in London later this week.
The audi-visual rights package covers 18 ICC events, including six that generate the most revenue: two World Cups, two Champions Trophy events and two World Twenty20 events, which will be held in India, England and Australia.
Since the previous media rights package over the last eight years was sold to ESPN Star Sports for 1.2 billion dollars, the one from 2015-2023 is expected to fetch the ICC around 2 billion dollars, making it the largest-ever.
The 17 bids are currently being reviewed for compliance with the terms and conditions of the tender arrangements, ICC said on Tuesday.
