Despite a tepid show with the bat, Gilchrist has sparkled with his captaincy and it showed in the way he motivated his squad to bounce back from the brink of exit.

Aware of the perils of T20, Gilchrist expressed caution ahead their semifinal clash against the Chennai Super Kings. “Chennai are one of the strongest squads in the tournament. You look at their bench, who are not playing and you realise how good the team is. We have been fortunate to beat them the last couple of times, but in the semis we all start from scratch.”

Not overtly worried about his form, the skipper is banking on a combined team effort. “I hope the match turns out to be good for me instead of Matty (Matthew Hayden). He is my mate but I would like to see him go for a cheap score. I am not losing sleep over my form. My role is to lead the team and see that they win the tournament. If I get the runs then great and if I don’t, I will back someone else to do it for us.”
