India vs England Highlights, 4th Test, Day 1: England ended the day on 53/3, behind India by 138 runs. Rory Burns and Haseeb Hammed couldn't stick around for long, with Jasprit Bumrah dismissing both England openers in the same over. Joe Root and Dawid Malan added 46 runs before Umesh Yadav picked up the big wicket of the England captain. Earlier, India were all out for 191 with Chris Woakes taking four wickets and Ollie Robinson grabbing three. Shardul Thakur produced a blazing half-century off just 31 balls and added a 50-plus partnership with Umesh for India's eighth wicket. Ajinkya Rahane endured another low score, getting dismissed for 47 as India were placed precariously at 122/6 at tea. England picked up the big wicket of Virat Kohli after the India captain scored a half-century off 85 balls - his 27th of Test career - and a second consecutive fifty of the series. India were 54/3 at the lunch interval, before England struck early in the second session, with Woakes picking up his second wicket and sending back Ravindra Jadeja. India's openers did well to score 28 runs in the first seven over, but pacers Woakes, Ollie Robinson and James Anderson combined to pick up three quick wickets....Read More

  Nightwatchman Craig Overton survives the final over. England finish the day on 53/3, behind India by 138 runs. India make sure they ended the day winning one session. India's bowlers have ensured that the game is once again wide open, especially with Umesh getting the in-form Root. He has scored 35 percent of England's runs in the series. Surely, India should try and restrict England for as low a score as possible. There wasn't much on the pitch but Bumrah and Umesh's wickets have throw the game open.   BOWLED HIM! Huge wicket for India as Umesh Yadav cleans up Joe Root. Beautiful ball from the Indian quick, gets Root forward and generates enough swing after pitching to clip the top off off-stump. The England skipper is on his way back. No fourth century for him... not for the time being.

  OUT! India deal first blow to England as Burns plays on. Bumrah with the first wicket. England 5/1. Burns' torrid time continue as he chips a good length ball into this stumps. Absolutely no reaction from Bumrah although his teammates erupt in joy. Also, this is Bumrah's 98th Test wicket.

  Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah have started off well. The former got the ball to shape into the left-hander Burns regularly while Bumrah bowled a maiden to Haseeb Hameed from the to other end. India need early wickets.

  All over, India bowled out for 191

  Three wickets in three balls halts India's first innings at 191. Shardul Thakur was out LBW, followed by Jasprit Bumrah getting run out and Umesh Yadav out caught in the slips off successive balls. Chris Woakes finished with four wickets, while Ollie Robinson continues his fine form picking up three. India would have been delighted with 200 on the score but 191 isn't bad either, given they were staring at the end of the tunnel at 127/7. They were revived by an unexpected 63-run partnership for the eighth wicket.

  Two exquisite shots for fours from Shardul Thakur. The first of them was was pitched back on a length, which he whipped for four on the leg side. The next would make any top order batsman proud, as Thakur produced a brutal straight drive for a boundary. Picks up three runs off the next ball. We've seen what he can do, and India would be hoping Thakur provides a repeat of his Gabba heroics.

  That would be big question heading into the final session of the day. At 122/6, another possibility of getting bowled out under 150 looms large for India, but remember... Shardul Thakur... not too long ago played an innings that strengthened India's position at the Gabba Test against Australia. And Rishabh Pant... well, his batting needs no introduction. India in desperate need of some good rearguard effort.

  India 122/6 at Tea on Day 1 against England at The Oval. So that's another session England have dominated. With Kohli and Rahane batting, it seems like India were onto a better performance in the second session, but England dismissing India's captain and vice-captain undid all the hard work put in by the two batsmen.

  OUT! Caught behind. Robinson gets Kohli for 50. India 105/5. That's all she wrote. A fine innings from Kohli comes to an end. Gets almost squared up by that back of a length delivery. The ball takes the outside edge and into the gloves of Bairstow. Big, big wicket for England.

  With wickets falling at one end, Virat Kohli has stood tall with a fabulous half-century, one of his cleanest ones in recent memory. But he realises that the job is only half done. At 105/4, India still aren't in the best of positions and the captain will be key from here onward if they are to get to a respectable first-innings total.

  After four leg byes, Kohli given room and the India captain plays another beautiful cover drive for four. Lovely follow through of the bat. It gets Kohli into the 40s. Easily the best he's looked in this series so far. Barring that dropped chance, Kohli has been flawless.

  Full ball. Kohli bends down on his knees. Down comes the free-flowing bat and caresses the ball through the covers for a four. What a shot. WOW! That's the Virat Kohli cover drive in all its glory. He gets in the 30s.

  DRS saves Rahane

  That looked plumb and Woakes was on his way to a third wicket, but DRS came to India and Rahane's rescue. Illingworth raised his finger in a jiffy but Rahane and Kohli had a conversation and the decision was referred. Height was always going to be the factor and that's what saves Rahane here.

  GONE! Woakes with his second wicket as Jadeja edges to second slip. India 69/4. A straight forward catch which Root completes successfully. He gave Kohli a reprieve in the previous over but no errors there. India's tactics of sending Ravindra Jadeja at No. 5 doesn't work. In comes Ajinkya Rahane, the original No. 5 batsman for India.

  Edged and the ball flies to the slip cordon. Joe Root and second slip and Rory Burns at third indecisive as no one really quite reacts to the ball. Root stretched his hands out late and Kohli survives. The first real loose shot from the India skipper as he simply pokes at the ball without using his feet much.

  FOUR: Kohli in the mood

  That's a good way to start a fresh session. Kohli drives gloriously on the off side and gets his fourth boundary. To be honest, this has been the India captain's cleanest innings so far in the tournament. He looked good during his innings of 42 at Lord's and a lot assured during his fifty at Headingley. But today, he's looked like a million bucks. Few plays and misses - almost none - and some authoritative strokes.

  At 54/3, not many would back India to post the average first-innings total at The Oval, which is 358. For India to do that, they will have to bat out of their skins. Sure, they have once posted 364 batting first (at Lord's), but on that instance, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma had provided India with a 100-run partnership. This time around, both openers are out cheaply and the middle-order is under pressure.

  Today was the 11th instance of James Anderson dismissing Cheteshwar Pujara in Tests, the most any bowler has gotten the India batsman's wicket in Test cricket. Nathan Lyon has dismissed Pujara 10 times, while Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have taken him out 7 and 6 times respectively.

  India 54/3 at lunch on Day 1 against England at The Oval, with Ravindra Jadeja and captain Virat Kohli the two unbeaten batsmen. Once again, India endure a grim session, while England would be over the moon to end the session with three wickets. In the first half an hour, India began well scoring 28 in the first seven overs, but from there, it was England all the way till the end of the first session with three of their four pacers picking up a wicket each.

  OUT! KL Rahul departs for 17 as Robinson gets him LBW. The England pacer catches Rahul in the back pad and seemed convinced right at the time of impact. Umpire Richard Illingworth took his time and just when Rahul could breathe a sigh of relief, up went the finger. Rahul had a conversation with Pujara and decided to take the review. Was the impact outside off? Was it missing the stumps? Nope, suggests the ball tracker. India have lost both their openers.

  The first hour of the day is taken care of and England would be glad with the way things panned out. India openers scored briskly at 4 an over, taking the total to 28 in 7 overs. And now, at the end of the 13th over, the score is still 28. Pujara is yet to get off the mark having faced 12 balls, while Rahul is batting on 17 off 39.

  England a review down

  Ambitious from England and Joe Root and because of it, England are now a review short. Robinson rapped Rahul on the pads and the initial impression was that of the ball missing leg. Everyone went up in a huge appeal, which probably prompted Root for the review, and sure enough, the ball was missing the leg stump by some margin.
