India went down by 31 runs to England in the first Test of the series on Saturday. Set a target of 194, India folded for 162.
One of the batsmen who failed to deliver in the Edgbaston Test was Shikhar Dhawan, the Delhi batsman only getting an aggregate of 39 runs in both innings of the match. That on top of bagging a pair in the warm-up match against Essex at Chelmsford.
Apart from the low scores, it was the manner of dismissals that left the tongues wagging, the left-hander on both occasions edging a full pitched delivery outside off stump, to Sam Curran in the first innings and Stuart Broad in the second.
Dhawan’s fielding in the slip cordon was also poor in the first Test. He dropped both Sam Curran and Adil Rashid at crucial junctures in England’s second innings and that allowed England to post a fighting total on the board.

The 32-year-old however has vowed to learn from his mistakes ahead of the next game. In a Twitter post Dhawan wrote “I know you’re all very sad & disappointed with our narrow loss yesterday. I’ve looked into my own performance, the mistakes I made and I’ll come back stronger and wiser in the next game. Thank u for all the love & support.”
India too will be hoping that he can recapture his old form which has seen the opener become one of the most feared batsmen in world cricket.
The next Test against England starts on Thursday at Lord’s.
