The Board of Control for Cricket in India has seen a reduction of revenues, thanks mainly to the cancellation of some matches and tours, and the shifting of the IPL to South Africa, but state associations never had it better.
Each of the state associations affiliated to the board received between Rs 21 and 28 crore last year. In all, the board paid out a total of 624 crore to the associations. The board anticipates that this will go up further, to Rs 766 crore for the financial year 2009-10. What is especially remarkable is that these same associations, just 10 years ago in 1999, were receiving less than a lakh of rupees each.
Amazingly, the losses to the board for cancellations of matches adds up to over Rs 114 crore. The cancellation of two home ODIs against England following the terror attacks in Mumbai cost the board Rs 73 crore. The cancellation of the Champions League and a tour of Pakistan caused a loss of Rs 14 crore.
The board was also forced to spend a significant amount as a result of the relocation of the IPL to South Africa. In the first edition, held in India, the board incurred expenses of Rs 124 crore (production costs Rs 51 crore + tournament expenses Rs 73 crore). In the second edition, in South Africa, the total cost rose to Rs 221 crore (production 73+ tournament expenses Rs 148 crore). Overall, the board reported a modest surplus of Rs 54 crore, of which 15 crore came from the IPL.
